Good morning from the countryside!
Every year, I eagerly await the arrival of spring so that I can start planting everything I have already planned to harvest during the summer season in my vegetable garden!
I think everyone is as eager as I am to start buying seedlings from nurseries or planting those sown in the seedbed!
As in all things, haste is a poor counsellor, and never more so than in agriculture, where it is better to wait and not take risks!
Every month of the year there are vegetables that can be sown and others that can be transplanted, although February to May and August to October are clearly the busiest periods for preparing summer and winter vegetable gardens!
In reality, some people sow vegetables directly in the ground that could be sown in seedbeds and then transplanted, such as onions, cabbages, tomatoes, pumpkins, aubergines and many others. Others, however, can, and indeed prefer, to be sown directly in the ground and not transplanted: broad beans, peas, beans and green beans, carrots and many others!
The ideal time for transplanting is clearly determined by one important variable: temperature. Needless to say, you cannot transplant tomatoes in your garden in March if you live in the north because it is definitely too cold, whereas from Campania downwards you can do so without any problems! There, you need to be good at identifying the right time for your area, and only you know the climate and temperature history of where you live!
I can certainly give you a general guideline, and I believe it is very useful to follow, but remember that you must adapt everything to your climate!
The vegetables we want to harvest from June onwards, i.e. the summer vegetable garden, are plants that grow in warm temperatures and temperate climates. They hate frost because it kills them and they do not tolerate low temperatures for too long.
Transplanting tomatoes and zucchini in March in the garden in a hurry to harvest when the nighttime temperature still drops below 10/12 degrees is often a move that only serves to waste time, money, and space! Those plants will grow slowly and be very stressed, they will always be suffering, and you will harvest very little!
On the other hand, transplanting a few weeks later, even if it is already late April or even May, will allow you to have vigorous plants and optimal harvests that will last until autumn.
I will conclude by reminding you that the table contains a large number of vegetables with their respective transplanting months. The names written in black indicate open field transplanting, the names in green may have an asterisk and indicate vegetables to be transplanted in a greenhouse or cold tunnel, those written in green with two asterisks indicate vegetables to be transplanted in a greenhouse heated to at least 13/15 degrees.
